DRK Kliniken - Lung Centre
Berlin, Germany
DRK Kliniken Berlin (DRK Hospital Group) includes five teaching hospitals of the famous Charité University Hospital and the Lung Centre is located at the Berlin Mitte hospital. It is one of six centres of excellence at DRK and was founded especially for the care and treatment of patients with lung cancer (bronchial cancer).
DKR Kliniken Berlin has carried continuous accreditation from JCI (Joint Commission International) since 2002 and was the first German hospital group to achieve this status. DKR Kliniken is also a member of the European Foundation for Quality Management and conducts a continuous quality maintenance programme to ensure that the highest standards are adhered to.
MHL (Medilux Healthcare Ltd.) promotes individual hospitals or hospital groups which we believe offer high standards of care. We provide you with general information and details of how to make contact with the centre, but we shall not be responsible for the quality of any diagnosis or treatment given or for the failure to diagnose or treat any condition. We cannot advise or enter into correspondence about individual cases and we do not arrange or facilitate treatments.

Directly after surgery, pain management therapy is coordinated with the Department of Anesthesiology and the Intensive Care Unit. By applying a pain catheter, patients are able to codetermine the dosage of pain relieving substances.
Diagnosis and therapy of diseases of the bronchia as well as of the lungs form the centre of medical attention and specialists of the Department for Surgery and Thorax Surgery, specialists of the Department for Pneumonology and doctors and physicians of the Radiation Centre work closely together.
At the Pneumological Centre, founded in 1988 under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Peter Dorow, basic diagnostics and checks are carried out. By applying the so-called "staging" checks, the tumour spread can be monitored and, by checking possible metastases, the appropriateness of surgery may be ascertained.
This clinic focuses mainly on treatment of lung diseases - particularly therapy of lung cancer, pulmonary metastases (tumour spread within the lungs), and emphysema (pulmonary over-inflation). There are large departmental areas for pneumological and cardiological checks, a Centre for Sleep Medicine and an interdisciplinary Intensive Care Unit.
During bronchoscopy, all interventional procedures are applied, such as laser therapy, photodynamical therapy, endobronchial radiotherapy of small areas, and the implanting of stents into the bronchial tubes.
All surgery on lungs, respiratory tree, pericardial vessels, costal pleura and chest wall is performed with the help of highly sophisticated modern equipment such as lung laser and digital video technique.
To provide early diagnosis of cancer of the bronchia, special forms of check-ups such as "autofluorescence bronchoscopy", for instance, are carried out. When indicated, special checks like endosonography of the bronchia as well as the thorax can be applied.
In the department of Surgery and Thoracic Surgery under the direction of Dr. med. Paul Schneider, special emphasis is put on tissue-sparing surgical techniques (bronchoplastical operations, so-called sleeve resections).
Tissue-sparing surgical techniques
Through such means it is often possible to avoid resection of a complete lobe of the lung and to ensure higher load capacity, better lung function for the patient and better quality of life.
Postoperatively, a newly refurbished intensive care unit was opened in 2006, which offers the necessary security to the patient during the first few days, further improving the prognosis.
The DRK Lung Centre performs approximately 1,600 operations per year in its three operating theatres. The new Nd-YAG laser used at DRK is designed specifically for lung surgery and has special features that allow cutting of lung tissue. With this new laser, the thoracic surgeon is in a position to cut clear through lung tissue, whereby metastases and tumours can be removed securely considering the nature of the disease.
